Trip to Die Oog

On Satorday 15 October2011 I made a quick trip to Die Oog bird sanctuary. Had’nt been there in awhile. Was surprised at the condition of the place as last time I was there it looked drab. The water level is quite high and altho the Island still looked bare it did have a couple of Cape Cormorants as inhabitants. The Blacksmith Lapwings had been demoted to the fynbos fields.

What I found interesting is the fact that all the water birds were busy with rearing young. The Egyptian Geese had 9 goslings and the Yellow-bill Ducks 3. There were 2/3 young Red-knobed Coot and the Moorhen we’re showing thier intensions too.

Since I had last been there the Cape Weavers had also increased their nesting colony by at least double. Seems like Die Oog is really going to blossom this summer.
